Pivot - The New World of 2026

Updated: Nov 26, 2025

We’ve just changed our name to Slate | Spark because for the next few years, success, whether personal or professional, will belong to those who can pivot quickly enough not to be left behind. Every pivot starts with an honest assessment of what was, what is, and what’s coming next. You can’t know where to move until you’ve taken a clear look at the ground beneath your feet.

We are living in a world where the change around us is spinning like a top across the vast landscape of potential business success.

For a long time, many of us believed our careers rested on stable foundations. Real estate always needed brokers. Companies always needed middle managers. Marketing was never going to be a department that disappeared. But the ground has shifted. AI has already rewritten the rules for efficiency, automation, and communication. The political and economic systems that supported entire industries are being restructured in real time.

In a recent conversation with a client who runs a quarter-billion-dollar business, he said to me, “I’m beginning to think there’s no point in putting any money in marketing right now.” My answer was that he was right, at least in one sense. The old investment in marketing won’t work in the new world. He has to change the way he’s doing marketing. And just like that, every professional today has to change the way they market themselves in this new job market. It begins with the pivot.

For decades, we believed in safety nets that no longer exist in the same way. But here’s the new truth. That doesn’t have to be frightening. It can be freeing. The old structures often boxed us in, and the new ones give us permission to reimagine how our skills can thrive in places we never looked before.

Take real estate for example. Ten years ago, success was about relationships, geography, and knowing your local market. Today, algorithms identify leads, AI platforms price properties, and buyers tour homes virtually. But that doesn’t mean real estate is dying. It’s morphing. Brokers who pivot toward becoming portfolio advisors, helping clients understand how property fits into long-term investment, lifestyle, and even climate resilience, are already shaping the future of the industry. They’re not selling houses. They’re building security.

Or look at middle management. Once considered the backbone of every organization, these roles are being hollowed out by automation. AI systems can schedule, analyze, and report faster than any human. But what AI can’t replace is emotional intelligence, the ability to translate vision into motivation or manage tension between innovation and stability. The managers who pivot toward becoming translators of human purpose, connecting teams to meaning rather than metrics, will remain essential. They’re not managing work. They’re managing culture.

This is the new frontier. There is no single right way forward, and that’s what makes it exciting. The people who will thrive are the ones who can look with curiosity instead of fear, who can say, “If the rules are changing, maybe it’s my turn to write new ones.”

Each week, we host three hours of open house sessions where you can come to discuss our white papers, ask questions, and get help tailoring these ideas to your own professional direction. Bring your story, your goals, and your next pivot. We’ll help you shape it.

Our first white paper lays out the history of how we got to this moment, and what evaluation you need to do to determine your plan for moving forward. It was a one-hour session, which we will do again, but the white paper lays out the ground work.

Some highlights...
